<p>The invention provides a process by which 1,2,4-butane- triol can be easily produced at a low cost, namely, a process which comprises reducing one or more starting compounds selected from among malic diesters, 3-hydroxy-Ϝ-butyrolactone and 3,4-dihydroxybutanoic esters as represented by the general formulae (Ι) in the presence of sodium borohydride in a medium into 1,2,4-butanetriol (ΙΙ), wherein the sodium borohydride and the starting compound are respectively incorporated in alcohols different from each other and then subjected to the reduction: (Ι) (ΙΙ) wherein R is alkyl having at most four carbon atoms.</p> |
