The pipe sections (10,11) fit together with plug-and-socket joints. The socket on each pipe may engage with the stepped end of a cylinder (2) freely moving on a piston (4) on a tilting and vertically-sliding mounting (14). The mounting slides in a groove in a frame (16) mounted inside the manhole shaft (18). The piston and cylinder assembly may be raised to a nearly vertical position at the top of the shaft and a length of pipe is loaded through the manhole, socket end downward, and fits onto the cylinder. The assembly is then lowered and rotated to a horizontal position in line with a pipe section in a side channel. Fluid under pressure is introduced through a central channel in the piston to push the cylinder and pipe forward.
