A high pressure rated composite pipe (10) is disclosed. The pipe has a helically wound outer tube (20) wound from an elongate plastics strip and a flexible woven inner tube (30), the inner tube (30) disposed within the outer tube (20), characterised in that the inner tube (30) is constructed to contain high pressure fluids and the outer tube (20) is constructed to withstand radial crushing loads. The composite pipe (10) is characterised in that when the inner tube (30) contains fluid at low pressure the outside diameter of the inner tube (30) is less than the inside diameter of the outer tube (20). This prevents the transfer of internal fluid pressure the outer tube (20). As the internal pressure increases to an operating pressure, the inner tube (30) expands. . In one form there is a synergistic effect in that the inner tube (30) expands to press against the inner periphery (22) of the outer tube (20) when the inner tube contains fluid at a pressure Pe, Pe being less than the pressure Pu at which the inner tube (30) would burst if unconstrained, resulting in a composite pipe (10) of a higher pressure rating than the unconstrained inner pipe (30). A very efficient low cost high pressure pipe results.
|
