A surface light source device comprising a light guide having a light incident surface at at least one side end thereof and a luminous surface at one surface thereof, a light source disposed in the vicinity of the side end of the light guide, and a light reflector disposed on the surface side opposite to the luminous surface, characterized in that the light guide mainly consists of polyolefin resin, the light reflector also mainly consists of polyolefin resin, a light reflector having a 1.5-cm-square plane is provided, and, when the reflection surface thereof is reciprocated 10 times at a speed of 2.5 cm/sec across a width of 5 cm on the surface, facing the light reflector, of the light guide while being pressed under a load of 135 g/cm<2>, virtually no scratch is recognized on the surface of the light guide. This surface light source device is characterized in that its light guide is not likely to get scratched and is light in weight.
