The pre-heated welding positions are pressed with a pre-determined force against a heating element, so that a bead is formed at the edges of the pre-heated surfaces lying against the heating element. Finally the surfaces are pressed together. The apparatus comprises displaceable clamping devices for the reception of the parts to be welded, hydraulic cylinders for producing the welding pressure, a pre-heating shoulder for determining the size of the bead; a heating element and an adjusting ring with scale attached, as well as a spring loaded adjusting ring for regulating the prestressing, the spring for which is supported on a pressure plate.
