A fastener 1 comprising a domed head 4 and a shank 2 which is provided with a cylindrical portion, is characterized in that a portion 3 of the shank adjacent to the head progressively increases in diameter from the cylindrical portion to a rim 5 of the head, the diameter increasing slowly adjacent to the cylindrical portion and rapidly adjacent to the head. The fastener may be pointed at its end remote from the head and a washer 8 may be provided to guide the fastener in a driving-in tool.
