The system comprises general nozzles disposed above and/or on the sides of the space to be protected for bringing about general fire extinguishment in the space, and/or spot nozzles disposed around objects in the space to be protected which are susceptible to fire, such as engines, feed pipe systems for fuel or open oil tanks for extinguishing fires in them. At least a portion of the nozzles consists of low-pressure nozzles, from which extinguishing water is sprayed at a pressure 12 bar, and preferably at a pressure of 2-12 bar, as water sprays which consist of drops of various sizes which are distributed in the water spray so that the frequency of the drops having larger diameters is greater at the periphery of the water spray than in the inner part of it, and correspondingly the frequency of the drops having smaller diameters is greater in the inner part of the water spray than at its periphery.
