An e-mail add-on service provides electronic notification regarding delivery status of a mailed item (108). In one embodiment, a sender (102) of a mailed item (108) receives electronic notification that a mailed item (108) has been received by a recipient (110). In another, an intended recipient (110) of a mailed item (108) receives notification that a mailed item (108) has been sent. Optionally, tracking of a mailed item (108) through the mailstream may also be provided electronically to a sender (102) and/or a recipient (110). Personal messages may be provided as part of such electronic notification.
