HOST-BASED AUTOMATIC IP ADDRESS NEGOTIATION METHOD

A host computer (6) connected to a network (12) serves as a proxy IP address negotiator for another device (10) connected to the network (12). The host computer (6) constructs and sends a first network packet for communicating with an IP address server (8) connected to the network (12). The IP address server (8) responds to the host computer (6) with a second network packet including a first IP address. The host computer (6) retrieves the first IP address from the second network packet, and sends the first IP address to the device (10) for adoption by the device as the device IP address.
