The belt retractor includes a winding energy converter (42) with several metal bands arranged symmetrically with regard to the center axis of the belt spool (12). A second energy converter (44) which is switchable has an outer ring and a locking ratchet by means of which the outer ring can be supported on the frame (10) of the retractor. A pyrotechnic actuator is provided for the movement of the locking ratchet. The thickness and width of the metal bands changes along their length.
