Composition and method for reducing the permeability of a subterranean zone

The permeability of a subterranean zone is reduced by introducing an aqueous solution of a water-soluble polymeric composition which forms a cross-linked gel in the zone. The composition comprises (a) at least one water-soluble polymer; (b) at least one organic gelling agent capable of cross-linking the water-soluble polymer; and (c) at least one water-soluble formate.
