A fabric, preferably a woven fabric, of polyolefin ribbon yarns is subjected to a fibrillating means so that fibrils break-out on the surface of the ribbon yarns to produce a fabric having a hand and appearance similar to a fabric woven of natural fibres. Preferably, the polyolefin is high density polyethylene or isotactic polypropylene and the ribbon yarns are oriented longitudinally. The fibrillating means may comprise grit impingement, e.g. compressed air sand blasting or pellet blasting, abrading, e.g. with a rotary wire wheel or a grindstone, or needling with barbed needles, e.g. with reciprocating needles or a rotating needle roll. The needles may be constructed as shown in Fig. 4a, 4b or 4c. The fabric may be heat set before or after fibrillation. Fibrillated fabrics of this invention may be used as primary and secondary backings PB, SB, respectively, in a tufted pile carpet fabric, Fig. 3. The primary backing PB comprises a tightlywoven lightly-fibrillated fabric and the secondary backing SB comprises a looselywoven, severely-fibrillated fabric. The pile yarn 32 is adhered by a layer of latex 31.</p> |
