A cylindrical insert 4 of beryllium oxide between copper nozzle 3 and graphite electrode 12 defines the reaction chamber 5. A flanged cylindrical body 6 is urged by screws 10 against nozzle 3 thereby compressing a gasket 8 and forming a cooling jacket 15 supplied by ducts 16, 17 through main body 1. Gas at super-atmospheric pressure introduced to chambers 18, 20 through duct 21 prevents leakage of plasma. Gas forming solids specified are ammonium carbonate, ammonium hydrogen carbonate, nitrates, e.g. ammonium nitrate, oxalic acid and ammonium oxalate. Materials which break down into gas forming plasmas and metal oxides which are used in spray coating such as MgC 2 O 4 .2H 2 O or may be used. Solid material which does not gasify may be introduced to the emergent plasma jet into the reaction chamber 5 for spray coating. The plasma jet can be used for performing high temperature chemical reactions.
