<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a solid oxide fuel cell having excellent durability against abrupt load variation and rise and fall of the battery temperature since an inexpensive stainless steel can be used as a porous substrate pipe material to remarkably reduce a material cost and since the porous substrate pipe material is highly strong and highly heat-conductive to uniformize the temperature distribution in cells and to remarkably increase the thermal shock resistance, and a method of operating the fuel battery. <P>SOLUTION: In this cylindrical solid oxide fuel battery, an electron-conductive and gas-impermeable inter-connector layer is formed at a portion of a porous substrate pipe in a vertical direction, and an air pole, a solid oxide electrolyte layer, and a fuel pole are formed, in this order, on the porous substrate pipe at the portions other than those where the inter-connector layer is formed.
