<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize high speed and high density recording. <P>SOLUTION: A voltage is applied to a pair of electrodes sandwiching a recording layer in between. The distance between the two electrodes is made large or small either for the lands or the grooves of an optical disk, or made so that only either one of them can absorb the light. And a layer changing its absorption spectrum by the applied voltage is provided on the recording layer or its adjacent layer. Thus, since the heat generating area is small when recording, auto-focusing and high speed revolution become possible with a large tracking error tolerance, and high speed and high density recording also become possible.
