PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable prompt bill handling by preventing a bill jam in a bill handling device, thus eliminating the need for repair resulting from the bill jam. SOLUTION: The bill handling device comprises a device body 10 for transferring a bill 3 and storing the bill other than the bill to be delivered, and a detachable box 20 that has a part to be mounted 21 which is detachably mounted to a mounting part 11 and stores and discharges the bill to be delivered 3. The device body 10 includes identifying means 14b, 14c for determining whether the bill 3 is the bill to be delivered or the bill other than the bill to be delivered, a transfer means 12 for transferring the bill 3 in forward and backward directions between the identifying means and the mounting part 11, and a storage-only part 15 for storing, other than the bill to be delivered, the bill transferred by the transfer means 12.
