A vertical magnetic recording medium comprising a substrate, an uneveness control layer provided on the substrate and having unevenness of grain size of 5-20 nm and mean roughness (Ra) of 0.2-2.0 nm on a surface thereof, and an orientation control layer provided on the uneveness control layer and containing at least 30 at.% of metal having the fcc structure as a simple substance. The vertical magnetic recording medium further comprises a magnetic recording layer provided in contact with the orientation control layer, consisting of a multi-layer film in which ferromagnetic thin films and non-magnetic thin films are alternately formed, and having a vertical magnetic anisotropy.
