A particle filter (5) operating by means of soot combustion comprises a filtering surface made from sintered metal between the crude gas side and the pure gas side. The soot covering the filtering surface is ignited over a part of the surface using an electrical heating source. Soot combustion takes place due to flame propagation in the layer of soot. Preferred Features: The heating source is formed by a heat radiator, preferably a laser or reflector. The filter surface impinged by the radiation has a surface for the collection of soot.
