[Also in Division B5] In order to effect a joint with a plastics adhesive the surface of plastics tubing is activated by passing the tube, filled with ionisable gas, through an electric field. When each surface is activated, the tube is cut into sections, and the ends are coated and joined with the adhesive forming sacks. The adhesives are cross-linked onto the electrically activated surfaces. The material may incorporate lubricants, which prevent the formation of polar groups of molecules at the surfaces of the tube. When adhesives, which are crosslinkable to isocyanates are used, the lubricants may contain -OH, -COOH, or -NH2 groups, which groups react to form polyurethanes. Lubricants consisting of amines or acid anhydrides are used with an epoxy resinous adhesive. |
