The identification system detects and recognizes bodies especially pipe cleaning pigs (4) passing through pipelines (1). It transmits at least one acoustic signal (5) through fluid in the pipeline and receives reflected or returned signals (6). The identification system has at least one signal transceiver (2) mounted on the outside of the pipeline and connected to an evaluation circuit (3). The tail end of the pig has a transceiver (8) connected to an evaluation circuit (7). The transceiver is triggered by a received acoustic signal and the return signal may give identification details of the pig.
