The cover (1) for the top side of shelves and cupboards has a cover panel (4) and a mounting to connect the cover panel to the cupboard (3) or shelf and grips or bears upon the cover panel at least in areas. The mounting is formed by at least one retaining strip (5) which fixes the cover panel at least against sliding in the horizontal direction. The retaining strip by one part (5a) of its cross section grips over an area or edge of the cover panel. The retaining strip has a retaining section (5a) and fastening section (5b) which together with the top side (2) of the cupboard form a slot with a dimension conforming to the thickness of the cover panel.
