The cylinder liner (12) has a flange at the top carrying a cylinder head (15) sealing ring (14) on its top surface and a thin sealing ring (32) on its undersurface (30). The ring rests on a shoulder (24) in the bore in the cylinder block (10). The thickness of the ring is reduced to 20 and 30 mu below the mean value in places near the bolts holding the cylinder head and is increased to 30 mu above the mean in other places.
