Following closure of a switch in a room thermostat (19), heater 14 is energized to cause thermal element 13 to shift slider 24 rightwards, thereby rotating shaft 28, via pin-and-slot drive (29, 30), to unseat valve member 60 and allow flow of heating fluid to outlet 40. Screws 32 carried by arm 31 of shaft 28 eventually move slider 34 sufficiently leftwards to open switch 21, 23, thereby de-energizing heater 14. Switch 33, 39, meanwhile, has closed to start up a pump or blower motor. The valve seat 45a is formed on insert 45 having sealing ring 44. Upon attainment of the desired room temperature, the thermostat switch opens and spring 27 restores the parts to the position shown.
