PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To determine the form of a misfire with accuracy when rotary fluctua tion is caused in a pattern different from typical rotary fluctuation as well as in typical rotary fluctuation. SOLUTION: This misfire detecting device is to determine the form of misfire of a single cylinder, continuous fire of two cylinders or intermittent fire of two cylinders when continuous ignition is made to three cylinders. In determining the form of misfire, based on the sum (KGX(2)+KGX(1)) of the quantities of rotary fluctuation of each cylinder which is ignited after the first and second ignitions of a specified cylinder, the misfire detecting device determines whether the current misfire is the misfire of the single cylinder (Step 190). A misfire is determined not to be the misfire of the single cylinder (Step 190: NO) by the misfire detecting device, then the misfire is determined whether it is a continuous misfire of two cylinders based on the deviation (KGX(2)-KGX(1)) of the quantities of rotary fluctuation of each cylinder which is ignited after the first and second ignitions later than the ignition of the specified cylinder (Step 210).
