PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a double deck elevator capable of safely evacuating all passengers within an upper car and a lower car in a short time in an emergency and having no restrictions on loading of the cars for stairways. SOLUTION: In this double deck elevator, the car has an emergency stairway device 4 for connecting the two connected upper car 1 and lower car 2 in the vertical direction. At a normal time, the emergency stairway device 4 is stored into a ceiling 3 of the lower car 2 between the upper car 1 and the lower car 2. The elevator has pulleys 8a to 8d and chains 9a to 9d to develop the emergency stairway device 4 stored into the ceiling 3 of the lower car in an emergency. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
