Data to be transmitted is processed such that the probability of encountering a 0- or 1-state in the data stream at each bit position is approximately identical, and independent of the other bit positions (scrambling). A guard interval tgb is allowed to expire then a synchronization sequence is transmitted over an interval tsy. A synchronization word is transmitted over interval tco. The useful data is transmitted. At the receiver end, the synchronization sequence is detected and lock is achieved. The synchronization word is detected, to determine the start of the data packet. The useful data is then received. Independent claims are is included for the corresponding transmitter and receiver.
