PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a zoom optical system simultaneously realizing power saving, a simple mechanism, light weight, miniaturization and high performance, and an image pickup device using the zoom optical system. SOLUTION: The zoom optical system has at least four reflection surfaces G1 to G4 whose shape is variable, and performs variable power by changing the shape of a reflection surface in a state where any optical element does not move at the time of performing the variable power.
