PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a stability evaluating method for the slopes of a rock mass, and its apparatus for evaluating the stability of the slopes of the rock mass rapidly and easily. SOLUTION: The temperature distributions and their changes with the passage of time of the slopes of the rock mass are measured by a thermal infrared image device 7, and the slopes are divided into groups in a control unit 1 on the basis of data on the temperature distributions and their changes with the passage of time. The slopes are measured by an electro-optical distance meter 5, and gradient data of each group are obtained. Reflection spectra of each group are measured by a spectroradiometer 6, and on the basis of the measured data b* values concerning the Lab colorimetric system of each group are calculated in the control unit 1. The correlation between each temperature change rate and b* value of each group is analyzed in the control unit 1, and approximate values of the speed of an elastic wave and the speed of an ultrasonic wave of a group which is in negative correlation are calculated by experience formulas from b* values concerning the group. From the found approximate values and the gradient data the slopes of the rock mass are evaluated. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
