PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To quickly, safely, and automatically carry out the setting of a projection length of a tool and the attachment/detachment of the tool to a tool holder with high accuracy. SOLUTION: There is provided a method for setting the projection length of the tool according to which a cutter T is clamped by a cutter holder 5, a heating coil 6 descends to a location at a predetermined length from the upper edge of the tool holder 13, and the heating coil 6 is heated, to thereby thermally expand the cutter insertion portion of the tool holder 13. When a cutter insertion hole is sufficiently expanded by heating, the cutter holder 5 clamping the cutter T starts its descent, and the cutter T is inserted into the cutter insertion hole. When it is detected that the cutter holder has descended by a distance A-S, i.e., that the cutter holder has descended to the location corresponding to the upper edge of the projection length S, the operation of the heating coil portion 6 is terminated to complete heating. After cooling over a predetermined period, a clamping claw 9 of the cutter holder 5 is released, the cutter holder 5 is elevated, and the heating coil portion 6 is elevated.
