<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an application method which prevents the occurrence of application nonuniformity on the surface of a strip caused by the flow of the second coating liquid immediately after the application and an applicator. <P>SOLUTION: In the application method for forming a multilayer coating layer on at least one surface of the strip traveling in a constant direction, the first coating liquid is applied and dried to form the first layer, and the second coating liquid is applied on the first layer and dried to form the second layer. At least one of the temperature of the strip and the temperature of the second coating liquid is adjusted so that the difference between the temperature of the strip when the second layer is formed and the temperature of the second coating liquid is 5°C or below.
