PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a coated type magnetic recording medium wherein electromagnetic conversion characteristics are good, especially a CM ratio is significantly improved in a high-density recording area. SOLUTION: The magnetic recording medium having a magnetic layer mainly made of ferromagnetic powders and a binder on a support is constructed in such a manner that on the surface of the magnetic layer, the number of projections of≥30 nm in height measured by an AFM is≤100/900μm<SP>2</SP>, the magnetization reverse volume of the magnetic layer is 0.1×10<SP>-17</SP>to 5×10<SP>-17</SP>ml, the Hc of the magnetic layer is≥2000 e (159.2 KA/m), and the PSD of a longitudinal space wavelength 10μm measured by magnification of 5 times is 500 to 4000μm<SP>3</SP>at the total light interference equation surface roughness of the magnetic layer formation side surface of the support.
