<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projector where a reflection type polarized light splitting element is arranged on the emitting surface side of a transmission type liquid crystal panel and the contrast characteristic of which is improved further. <P>SOLUTION: The projector is equipped with an illuminator emitting a polarized beam; the transmission type liquid crystal panel modulating the polarized beam from the illuminator; the polarized light splitting element arranged on the emitting surface side of the transmission type liquid crystal panel, arranged in a state where its incident surface is inclined at about 45° to an optical axis, and splitting transmitted light through the transmission type liquid crystal panel to two cross components so as to transmit either linearly polarized light and reflect the other linearly polarized light; an emitting side polarizing plate arranged on the emitting surface side of the polarized light splitting element; and a projection lens enlarging and projecting the light beam transmitted through the emitting side polarizing plate; and is equipped with an optical compensating plate compensating the rotation of the axis of polarization of the beam in the polarized light splitting element between the illuminator and the emitting side polarizing plate. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO |
