PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an automatic transmission capable of speed changing in seven ahead stages by means of an engagement device of lesser friction using three planet gear devices. SOLUTION: In the automatic transmission provided with five friction engagement devices comprising the first, second and third planet gear devices 18, 20 and 22, clutches C1 to C3 and brakes B1 and B2, first, second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh speed change stages are materialized by the engagement of the clutch C1 and the brake B1, the engagement of the clutch C1 and the brake B2, the engagement of the clutches C1 and C3, the engagement of the clutches C1 and C2, the engagement of the clutches C2 and C3, the engagement of the clutches C2 and the brake B2 and the engagement of the clutch C2 and the brake B1 respectively.
