A cervical tissue sampling device, comprises a barrel (12); a plunger (33) disposed for reciprocal sliding movement in the barrel and collecting means for collecting tissue secured to a distal end of the plunger. The collecting means includes a brush (34) and a sponge (40) dimensioned and disposed to at least partially surround the brush when the plunger is retracted within the barrel.
