Production of a chemical composition, especially for surface treatment, preferably etching (on) and/or roughening of surfaces, comprises mixing an aqueous hydrofluoric acid (HF) solution with an aqueous ammonia (NH3) solution at a HF/NH3 molar ratio at least 1.90. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a chemical composition obtained by this method; (2) a method of treating, especially etching and/or roughening, surfaces by: (a) pretreatment, especially degreasing and/or wetting, if necessary; (b) contacting the surface with the chemical composition; (c) allowing this to act on the surface for the time needed for roughening and/or etching; and (d) rinsing the composition away with a neutralizing agent, especially with water or aqueous alkali hydroxide solution; (3) surfaces treated by this method; and (4) articles and objects with surfaces treated by this method.
