A catalyst (I) comprising a complex of a Group VIII metal with at least one ligand having at least one heterobicyclo(2.2.2)octane structural element is new. An Independent claim is included for a process for the hydroformylation of compounds having at least one ethylenically unsaturated double bond by reaction with carbon monoxide and water in the presence of a catalyst (I).
