[Also in Division G3] In a rolling-mill, electrical signals dependent on rolling load, the screw-down force applied to back-up rolls, and the distance between the axes of the working and back-up rolls, are combined to control an hydraulic cylinder applying force to the back-up rolls. As shown, work rolls 1a, 1b are engaged by back-up rolls 2a, 2b to which forces are applied by screw members 4 and an hydraulic cylinder 9 all of which act between a housing 16 and a lower back-up chock 7b. An electrical signal from a load cell 5 responsive to the rolling load is amplified at 12 and multiplied at 13 by a factor dependent on the spring constants of the mill so that, when opposed at 14 to an electrical signal from a screw load responsive cell 3 amplified at 11, any difference is normally effective to adjust a valve 15 controlling the fluid pressure applied to cylinder 9 to maintain the ratio between roll load and screw load constant and thereby ensure a constant roll gap under load. However, to compensate for variations in the relative position of the axes of the work and back-up rolls, e.g. due to changes in their diameter, these variations are detected by electrical pick-offs 6a, 6b which also apply signals, suitably proportioned at 10, to controller 14.
