<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an organic substance treatment apparatus capable of obtaining a stable measured value of high accuracy using an optical water content sensor. <P>SOLUTION: The organic substance treatment apparatus is equipped with a treatment tank 1 housing a carrier of microorganisms for decomposing an organic substance and decomposing the organic substance such as charged garbage and a water content detection means for detecting the water content of the housed organic substance in the treatment tank 1. The optical water content sensor 70 is used as the water content detection means and arranged so as to be positioned under the upper surface of the housed organic substance D in the treatment tank 1. Concretely, the water content sensor 70 is attached to the outer surface of the treatment tank 1.
