Polypeptide of formula N-L-C (I), where N and C are amino acids (aa) 25-81 and 112-157 of glycoprotein gp41, respectively, and L is a flexible linker of 2-30 aa, is new. Independent claims are also included for: (1) conjugate (C) of (I) and a carrier protein or peptide; (2) DNA sequence (II) that encodes (I) or (C); (3) vector containing (II); (4) host cell containing the vector of (3); and (5) preparing (I) by expression in cells of (4).
