PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an organic EL element and a manufacturing method capable of effectively suppressing entrance of water, gas, or the like into an organic EL light emitting layer, considered to be a degradation cause without degrading picture quality of a display image. SOLUTION: Grooves 59 are formed in an insulating layer 60 constituting organic EL elements 10 and 20, and/or a transparent electrode 57 has an opening 58. Thus, water, gas, or the like (considered to be a degradation cause component of the organic EL element) creeping out through a barrier layer 56 by heating in driving the elements is removed, and erosion of the organic EL light emitting layer 61 by a lower layer is suppressed.
