PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To greatly save the trouble of a check operation performed to print a proper number of images from a recording medium having both an image recorded in a specified recording format such as the DPOF standard and an image recorded in another recording format. SOLUTION: It is decided whether each of images recorded on the recording medium is a DPOF image or non-DPOF image and according to the decision result a thumbnail image SG is generated to generate an index image (on a display screen) in which generated thumbnail images SG are listed in a plurality of columns. External frames CW in a specified color are displayed at the outer edge of thumbnail images SG11 and SG12 of DPOF images. Further, file names FN displayed below the thumbnail images SG11 and SG12 of the DPOF images are displayed in a color different from that of file names FN displayed below thumbnail images SG21 and SG22 of non-DPOF images.
