<p>A process for producing 1-(4-pyridyl)-4-piperidone which comprises converting 4-aminopyridine, which is inexpensive, as a starting material into a nitrogenous dicarboxylic acid or an ester thereof, subsequently causing the acid or ester to undergo intramolecular condensation to form a nitrogenous cyclic ß-keto form, optionally conducting hydrolysis, and then conducting decarboxylation; and an intermediate for the production which is represented by the following formula (III). Thus, 1-(4-pyridyl)-4-piperidone having a high purity can be industrially obtained at low cost in a high yield under mild reaction conditions through a simple purification step while diminishing by-product generation.
