The method involves determining at least one operating parameter of the machine, and using it to calculate the crack growth of existing flaws in the component. An internal flaw is determined to be a surface flaw if the internal flaw has grown to an external surface of the component. The current status of the crack is thereby retrievable. The component is a turbine blade, a housing or a shaft of a gas turbine. The operating parameter is the temperature, pressure, a cycle count or a frequency. Independent claims are included for a computer system, a computer program and a computer program product.
