Metallic or plastic surfaces are treated to produce a simultaneous layer of solid lubricant electrolytically deposited, together with deposited metal(s) M by electrolysis, electrophoresis or chemical means; the lubricant is intimately mixed with the alloy. Treatment is effected using an aq. soln. contg. (a) one or more thio or seleno molybdates, tungstates, or niobates, or material of similar properties, or constituents which will produce these cpds. and (c) one or more salts of metal(a) M. Spec. the constituents (a) and (b) are chemically inert to each other so that no precipitating of unwanted cpds. occurs. Treated surfaces have improved resistance and very low coefft. of friction.
