PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of analyzing the frequency of a time series signal and a method of encoding a sound signal which have a high analysis accuracy as the whole and have reduced calculation load by reducing unnecessary calculation in a low frequency band and reducing omission of detection in a high frequency band. SOLUTION: After standard frequencies corresponding to a chromatic scale of temperament of music is set (S1), the different numbers of auxiliary frequencies are set on the basis of intervals of the standard frequencies (S2), and a plurality of harmonic functions corresponding to each set frequency are prepared (S3). Unit sections are set for the sound signal (S4), correlation with harmonic functions in each unit section is calculated to calculate a correlation value (S5). A maximum correlation value between adjacent standard frequencies out of calculated correlation values is extracted as a main correlation value (S6), and the sound signal is encoded on the basis of the extracted standard frequencies and main correlation value (S7).
