PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide anα-hydroxy-α-(2-hydroxyl-1-naphthyl)acetic acid useful as an optical resolving agent and its derivative, and to provide a method for producing the same by which production can be carried out at a low cost with excellent productivity according to a simple operation and mass production can further be performed in a higher yield. SOLUTION: The method for producing theα-hydroxy-α-(2-hydroxy-1-naphthyl) acetic acid having a structure of chemical formula comprises the following steps. A racemate synthesizing step of reacting 2-naphthol with glyoxylic acid under basic conditions and providing a racemate (±)-α-hydroxy-α-(2-hydroxyl-1- naphthyl)acetic acid and an optical resolving step of optically resolving the racemate and affording the optically activeα-hydroxy-α-(2-hydroxy-1-naphthyl) acetic acid.
