PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a technique of detecting a vehicle body side with simple structure and a stable operation, that eliminates malfunctions caused by influences of temperature, wind or the like, and adhesion of water drops and that does not require movement of detection means in the vehicle width direction. SOLUTION: Vehicle body detection means including light emitting devices 5 to 8, light receiving devices 9 to 12 and the like is placed on a gate type frame 1 in a manner that the means is positioned under a main body of a vehicle body 2. The detection means detects a front end portion and a rear end portion near the outside of each of at least two left and right wheels, front wheels 19 and 20 for example, and determines the relative position of the side of the vehicle body 2 against the frame 1 based on the detected data.
