In a centrifuge for separating and de-aerating milk, the milk is introduced without impact within the centrifuge rotor by means of a stationary pipe 5 which is kept completely filled with milk and which opens at 27 close to the bottom 25 of a hollow body 24 which is screwed onto the top of the rotor shaft 4 and has an upwardly widening conical vaneless internal surface so that the milk is deflected upwardly by the bottom 25 into a continuous, thin, rotary air-free layer 26 towards an upper part 12 of a distributor 12, 13 in which milk accumulates to a level 28 enclosing a central annular air space 30. The air-free milk then .passes through a conical passage 29 of uniform thickness and via entraining vanes 23 into a separating space 14 in the rotor. Cream is separated in a conical disc set 15 and flows through holes 17 into a paring chamber 10 from which it is discharged by means of a paring disc 8. Skim milk flows from the periphery of the space 14 through a passage 18 into another paring chamber 11 and is discharged by a paring disc 9. The air separated from the milk leaves the air space 30 through an annular passage 19 and holes 20, 21 in the paring discs 8, 9 and is discharged to atmosphere through an annular passage 22 in the' top of the rotor. |
