Disclosed is a method for hydrocracking a petroleum heavy oil that is used to obtain a high distillate yield economically in hydrocracking a petroleum heavy oil containing heavy metals such as a vacuum residue. Specifically, the method comprises a reaction step of supplying a raw material slurry containing a petroleum heavy oil and a limonite ore catalyst, and a hydrogen gas to a suspended-bed reactor; and a step of hydrocracking the heavy oil under the reaction conditions of reaction pressure: 30 to 160 kg/cm2, reaction temperature: 430 to 455 .degree.C, and reaction time: 30 to 180 minutes, wherein pretreating in which the raw material slurry is heated at a temperature of 320 to 420 .degree.C for 10 to 60 minutes is performed during heating of the raw material slurry up to the reaction temperature: 430 to 455 .degree.C.
