PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To form an air outflow step (10 nm or less) on a flying surface of a magnetic head slider with high precision and sufficient reproducibility. SOLUTION: With respect to a protective coat surface constituting of a film having one or more layers formed on the slider rail face including a magnetic head mounting face, a step of 10 nm or less is formed by using the thickness of one or more layers of the protective coat. This allows the step to be formed with high precision and with sufficient reproducibility. Additionally, selective processing of the protective coat by performing chemical etching on the protective coat, also allows the step to be formed with high precision and with sufficient reproducibility.
